Reading and Learning — A Book List for Our Communities

Do not buy any of these.

Every book below is available free through your public library, in print and usually as an ebook or audiobook you can read on your phone.

Get a library card. Usually free, and usually needs only proof of address. Ask what documents your library accepts — the list is often broader than people assume.
Install Libby. Free app, sign in with your library card, and borrow ebooks and audiobooks instantly. Large Spanish and French collections at most systems.
Ask for what is missing. Libraries buy books their members request, and will often order a title on request in another language.
Audiobooks count. If reading in English is slow, listen while you drive or work. It is the same book.

A book you paid for and did not read costs more than a book you borrowed and did.

Useful before inspirational — a book that explains how credit actually works beats one that tells you to believe in yourself. And widely available in Spanish and French, because a list our members cannot read is not a list.

Language availability is a guide, not a guarantee — editions vary. Ask your librarian, and tell us if we have any of this wrong.

Your community college — free or near-free ESL classes, often several levels, often evenings
Your public library — free conversation groups, tutoring and language software
Khan Academy — free maths, economics and test preparation, in many languages

Learning something that pays

Coursera and edX — university courses free to audit; you pay only for a certificate, which most employers do not require
freeCodeCamp — free, complete, and genuinely how people get technology jobs without a degree
Google and Microsoft free certificates — short, practical, recognised by employers
Your local library's databases — many carry paid course libraries free with a card

For associations

A reading circle gives your club a reason to meet that is not a crisis.

One book a quarter, discussed at a regular meeting, in whatever language the room speaks. It costs nothing, it takes an hour, and it is the simplest thing an association can add.

Pick one book, together

Let members choose from the list. A book people picked gets read; a book someone assigned does not.

Give it a quarter

Three months is enough for people working two jobs. Announce the date of the discussion when you announce the book.

Borrow, do not buy

Send everyone the library instructions above. If your library allows it, ask about a book club set — many lend ten or twenty copies of one title at once.

Hold it in the language of the room

The discussion matters more than the language of the edition. People can read it in Spanish and discuss it in Spanish.

Ask three questions, not twenty

What surprised you? What would you actually do differently? Who here has already done something like this? The third question is where the real value is — it surfaces the members who have done the thing.

End with one action each

Everyone names one thing they will do before the next meeting. Read it back at the start of the next circle. That single habit is what turns reading into results.

Circles also surface your future coaches. The member who has already opened the business, got the credential, or bought the house usually says so in a reading circle before they would ever put their hand up for anything.
